Australian School Increases Student Play Time by Adopting a 'Finnish Break' Every Hour.

Harkaway Primary School students now have six breaks a day, four 10 minute breaks and two 45 minute breaks to allow them to play after periods of school work. The change to the original school routine occurred after adopting a Finnish standard school practice in which children take a break to play regularly throughout their school day. This is an excellent article that breaks down how adopting a system of short breaks throughout the day has improved learning outcomes for students. Change can occur, we just need to work together to make it happen. Share this article with your child's school leaders or use it to help start a conversation. SOS Therapy and Learning Centre strongly advocates for an increase in time for children to play throughout the school day. Clare Catmore Principal Speech Pathologist.
